Top Luxury Interior Designers in the Bay Area: Saga Interiors | Full House Design

For Bay Area homeowners looking for a top luxury interior designer to handle an entire home, Saga Interiors offers full-service design from first sketch to final styling. Founder and principal designer Mahsa Afsharpour leads every project from the firm's studio on the San Francisco Peninsula, and Saga Interiors' work runs from a downtown San Francisco penthouse to family homes in Hillsborough and San Mateo.

Saga Interiors' warm modern interiors draw on Mahsa's Persian heritage, her Scandinavian upbringing and California living. This page covers what makes design work across the nine-county Bay Area different, the studio's projects around the region, how a full-house project runs, fees, reviews from Bay Area clients and answers to the questions people ask most.

Why Saga Interiors Is a Top Choice for Bay Area Homes

Saga Interiors is built for homeowners who want one team to take a whole house from plans to move-in, not a designer who picks a few pieces. The firm handles drawings and 3D renderings, finishes, custom cabinetry, procurement, site visits, installation and styling, and it publishes its minimums openly. Mahsa spent more than 15 years at a Fortune 500 company before founding the firm, and that background shows in how projects are run. Architectural Digest's editors selected Saga Interiors for the AD PRO Directory, and Bay Area clients give the firm 5.0 stars on Yelp.

What Makes Interior Design in the Bay Area Different

The Bay Area is not one market. It spans nine counties and 101 cities and towns, home to about 7.68 million people in 2026, according to MTC Vital Signs data from the California Department of Finance. Each city sets its own planning process, so the same project can follow very different paths a few miles apart.

A few examples from Saga Interiors' core service area:

  • San Francisco: Under Planning Code Section 311, some residential permit applications require notice to neighbors, depending on location and scope. Work inside the existing walls generally falls outside that trigger.

  • Hillsborough: The town's Architecture and Design Review Board holds public hearings on the design of new houses, additions, landscaping, street-facing fences and gates, and other exterior changes.

  • Atherton: On construction sites, trees being preserved need protective fencing at least six feet high, shown on permit plans, plus quarterly arborist reports.

Home values vary just as much. The typical Bay Area home was worth about $1,170,000 in 2025, ranging from about $1.57 million in Santa Clara County to about $574,000 in Solano County, according to MTC Vital Signs data from the Zillow Home Value Index. At the high end, interiors carry real weight in a home's value and in how it lives day to day.

For a design project, this means timelines, approvals and trade schedules change from city to city. Saga Interiors prefers to join projects as early as possible and works directly with architects, builders and structural engineers, so local requirements are part of the plan from the start.

Saga Interiors Projects Across the Bay Area

San Francisco

  • 181 Fremont: A Penthouse Amongst the Clouds, San Francisco. Design and furnishing of a 2,575-square-foot, three-bedroom condo high above downtown, which Mahsa first saw in the building's final stages of construction. Neutral tones, layered textures and sculptural lighting keep the views of the city and the Bay in focus. The project was toured in MyDomaine (2021). Photography by Alyssa Rosenheck. The Peninsula

Commercial Work

  • By Bonnie Jewelry: Atelier Du Diamant, Burlingame. Two dated 1990s offices turned into a showroom of about 3,000 square feet, up from about 300, with a custom glass sliding door system, client seating and staff offices. Photography by Golsa Afsharpour.

Meet Mahsa Afsharpour: A Bay Area Designer Shaped by Three Countries

Mahsa Afsharpour founded Saga Interiors and leads every project as principal designer. Her family left Iran during the Iran-Iraq war and settled in Gothenburg, Sweden, in 1986, when she was six. The firm's About page says those years made a comfortable home feel like a source of stability, and that is where her interest in designing homes began.

Before founding Saga Interiors, she spent more than 15 years at a Fortune 500 company in roles from B2B sales to management. Today she brings that experience in organization, leadership and communication to whole-home projects across the Bay Area.

Saga Interiors' Warm Modern Style in Bay Area Homes

Saga Interiors calls its look warm modern: clean lines softened by layered textures, rich materials, beautiful lighting and a few sculptural pieces, shaped by Persian warmth, Scandinavian simplicity and California ease. There is no single signature look. Each home is designed around the people who live in it.

The Bay Area's range of architecture gives that style plenty to work with. In a glass-walled San Francisco tower, Mahsa kept furniture visually light so the views lead. In a 1931 Spanish Revival home in San Mateo, the job was keeping original character while modernizing the kitchen and finishes, an approach she describes in her post on California Mediterranean homes. She also looks for vintage pieces with a story, naming the Oakland Vintage Market and the Berkeley Flea Market among her sourcing spots in Apartment Therapy (2023).

Full House Design Services in the Bay Area

Every service below comes from Saga Interiors' services page and inquiry page. The studio takes on a select number of projects each year.

Whole-Home Design and Furnishing

Saga Interiors selects furniture, lighting and accessories, tracks every item's cost and lead time on detailed specification sheets, handles purchasing and procurement, and finishes with installation and styling. Furnishing projects start at two rooms.

Luxury Renovations and Remodels

For remodels, the firm produces sketches, drawings, elevations and 3D renderings, selects materials and finishes, designs custom kitchen and bath cabinetry, and keeps the job on track with project management and site visits. Renovation projects typically begin at $150,000+ in overall scope.

New Construction Interior Design

Saga Interiors likes to join new builds early, working directly with the architect, builder and structural engineer so lighting, built-ins and finishes are planned with the house. The 181 Fremont penthouse began while the building was still in its final stages of construction.

Design Fees

Saga Interiors' design fees begin at $10,000 and are customized per project. For larger full-home projects, the firm says fees generally average $20 to $25 per square foot, depending on scope and complexity. Furniture, materials and construction are budgeted on top of the design fee.

How a Saga Interiors Project Works in the Bay Area

A project starts with a conversation about scope. From there, the firm says it helps clients set a realistic budget, puts together a detailed proposal and builds a timeline it commits to. Design development follows with renderings and selections, and specification sheets show prices and lead times before anything is ordered.

The studio then orders, receives and tracks every piece and coordinates the contractors, artisans, fabricators, installers and receivers it says it has worked with for about 10 years. The project ends with installation day and styling, so clients move into finished rooms.

On pricing, the firm says it explains its design fees, how its pricing and markups work, and any added costs up front. Clients know what they are approving and what comes next.
